STP Talks: What is the best way to do distributed development?

Distributed development, dealing with change, computer security and the Schibsted brand were the topics discussed in this year´s STP Talks.

For the second time Schibsted Tech Polska´s own “talk show” was organized earlier this year.  In one our no less than 12 different guests discussed four topics of interest to employees in Schibsted Media Group.

Here is the video of this year´s show:

This is STP Talks

STP Talks is a format to discuss some topics in a more engaging way than just having keynote presentations. The show is supposed to be informal and fast-paced – and the guests change frequently during the show.

The 12 talk show guests – half of them women – represented both Schibsted Tech Polska and other Schibsted companies. The show was part of STP´s Winter Event earlier this year and hosted by John Einar Sandvand, Chief Communications Officer in Schibsted Tech Polska

Topic 1: Computer security

In the first part security specialist Einar Otto Stangvik from the Norwegian media house VG tells the exciting story about how he used his programming skills to catch Norwegian men who downloaded child porn. The work was published in series articles in VG and gained massive attention in Norway.

Topic 2: Dealing with change

The IT industry is changing rapidly – and what a programmer knows today, may no longer be relevant in only 5 years.  How do we deal with these rapid changes – both as companies and individuals?

Many of us love to say we love change. But is it really so?

“No”, says Joanna Zasadzinska, director of organizational development in Schibsted Tech Polska.

In this topic: Meet also a woman who went from being German teacher to start as programmer.

Topic 3: Distributed development

Schibsted Tech Polska works with partners in both Norway, Sweden, England and Spain. In all projects team members are distributed on at least two locations.

So how to make distributed development work in the best possible way? Is there a golden formula?  A best practice that should always be followed?

Yes and no, according to the participants in this discussion. Many methodologies can work, but there definitely are some key ingredients that must be in place for a distributed project to work well.

A good plan, communication and evaluation are key ingredients in making distributed development work, said department manager Mateusz Jaracz

Topic 4: Brand loyalty

The final topic was specific to current developments in Schibsted Media Group, where global organizations for products and tech currently are being built.  Many who have earlier worked for one of the strong daughter brands will now instead work for Schibsted Products & Technology.

What does a process like this do to your identity as employees?, the participants were asked. What makes you most proud, working for a daughter company or for Schibsted as a whole?

Schibsted Tech Polska´s employee representative Agnieszka Lasyk was the main guest in the last topic.
